Over 30 members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have resigned from Sa’adu Zungur University, SAZU in Bauchi State, Daily Post reports.
Namo Timothy, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Bauchi Zone, who disclosed this at a press conference at Yuli Campus of the University on described the development as worrisome.
He explained that the Sa’adu Zungur University, SAZU a State owned University, is at the verge of collapse due to poor management of academic and human resources.
The ASUU coordinator, while calling on the Bauchi government to declare a state of emergency on the university to reverse trends of poor handling of affairs over the years, warned that except that is done, the ASUU branch can no longer guarantee industrial harmony between its members and the university administration.
He stated that the institution does not have a fashionable Pension Scheme or welfare arrangements for either sick or death benefits for staff and members as obtained in other public service organisations across the country.
He further stated that the SAZU administration owed its members Earned Academic Allowance and Excess Work Load Allowance to the tune of over N650 million from 2012 to date.
He frowned at the Appointment of an HND graduate as Bursar of the University contrary to the provision of the scheme of service of the university which spelt out that only candidates with a minimum of first degree should be considered for appointment as Bursar.
“The ASUU chapter has engaged key stakeholders and exchanged several correspondences in an attempt to resolve the issues but all efforts have failed as the state government remain nonchalant over the issue.
“As it stands, about 30 Lecturers have left the University insearch of better places with good working environment and better conditions of service.
