UNFPA and Norwegian Government Transform Lives: 50 VVF Patients Receive Lifesaving Treatment in Gombe State
In a significant humanitarian effort, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Norwegian Government, in collaboration with the Fistula Foundation Nigeria (FFN), have provided free medical treatment to over 50 vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) patients in Gombe State.
This joint operation aims to address the critical health challenges faced by women in the northern part of Nigeria, where thousands have succumbed to VVF-related diseases.
A vesicovaginal fistula is a debilitating condition characterised by an abnormal opening between the bladder and the vagina, leading to continuous urinary incontinence. The causes of VVF are deeply rooted in societal issues such as obstructed labour, early marriages, poverty, and the limited control women have over family resources.
The consequences of VVF extend beyond the physical ailment; women and girls suffering from this condition often endure abandonment by their spouses and social isolation due to the offensive odour and the associated stigma of urine leakage.
Recognising the severity of this issue, the European Union has expressed concern and supported surgical interventions to repair these abnormalities.
The recent surgical campaign, conducted at the Specialist Hospital in Gombe from November 6th to November 10th, 2023, witnessed the collaboration of dedicated medical professionals.
Musa Isa, Director of the Fistula Foundation, represented by Ibrahim Abubakar, affirmed the success of the surgery. Dr Sa’ad Idris and Dr Garba Mohammed, the lead surgeon and desk officer, respectively, also described the exercise as a triumph in medical intervention.
Dr. Mu’azu Shaibu Isaq, the Medical Director of Specialist Hospital Gombe, commended the organisations involved and the state government for their proactive approach to women’s healthcare.
He emphasised the importance of husbands supporting their wives during pregnancy and childbirth to prevent complications, reinforcing the role of family involvement in maternal health.
The beneficiaries of this initiative expressed their gratitude to the Fistula Foundation, UNFPA, the Norwegian government, and the Gombe state government for providing this life-changing opportunity.
They called on other stakeholders to emulate these efforts, underscoring the collective responsibility in addressing women’s health challenges.
This impactful initiative extends its reach beyond Gombe State, touching the lives of thousands of vulnerable individuals.
The collaboration between UNFPA, the Norwegian Government, and the Fistula Foundation exemplifies the transformative power of global partnerships in addressing pressing healthcare issues, ensuring that no woman is left behind in the pursuit of a healthy and dignified life.
