Bandits target Taraba State’s top government officials, elected politicians, and monarchs
Armed bandits in Taraba State have renewed their attacks on unsuspecting residents of the state, with top government functionaries, elected and high-level office holders, politicians, and traditional rulers as their major targets.
Reports reaching the New Herald Online from the state indicate that, while the attacks remain an unresolved puzzle to the state security architecture, the government has renewed its war against bandits and banditry across the state.
In the recent onslaught, the bandits were said to have attacked and killed the District Head of Sarkin Kudu Town in the Ibbi Local Government Area of the State of Ali Hakimi.
The district head was reportedly attacked in his palace at about 12.30 p.m. on December 16th, 2023.
A source in the area revealed that the bandits, numbering about 10, forced their way into the palace of the district head and killed him on the spot.
Banditry in Wukari, Ibbi, Takum, Donga, Kurmi, Bali, Ussa, Ardo Kola, Yorro, and parts of Lau Local Government areas has been on the increase for quite some time now, as not even the state capital, Jalingo, is safe as many were either attacked or kidnapped recently.
According to sources, the bandits, after launching their attack, usually escaped into the bush, using the same strategy they adopted after killing the district head, as apprehension enveloped the community as to who could be the next target.
The police spokesman of Taraba State Police Command, SP Usman Abdullahi, could not be reached immediately for comments on the incident as his phone number was not reachable.
