Days after Taraba State authourities sought for collaboration with the Adamawa State governement in the fight against Bandits on the border lines between the two states, the dreaded
armed bandits believed to have fled the firepower of Security Operatives from Taraba State and taking refuge in the border villages of Toungo Local Governemnet have launched attacks on communities in the area.
At the moment, the local government is said to be overwhelmed by sporadic attacks from the Bandits.
The escaping bandits were said to have Kidnapped 11 persons including a Camerounian gendarme(Soldier) who was captured at one of the border posts on the Camerounian side on Monday.
The Chairman of Toungo Local Government Council,Hon. Suleiman Ahmed Gangkuba who disclosed this to New Herald said, all the 11 Kidnapped victims including the Camerounian Soldier have been rescued through the efforts of local Hunters, vigilante groups and joint military patrol in the Area.
The Chairman added that the security consciousness and network provided by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri which evolves from the grassroot through Community policing was responsible for the successful and timely rescue of the victims.
Gangkuba said,he had adequately briefed the authorities and more support is being expected to overcome the situation.
However, the Adamawa State Police Command could not confirm these reports as the State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Yahya Nguroje who spoke to New Herald on phone said he has been on assignment and couldn’t confirm the report.
The Chairman who decried the deteriorating security situation in the area,however appealed to the Federal and State governments to deploy more military personnels to assist in combating the dreaded bandits.
According to Gangkuba,a coordinated simultaneous operations between Adamawa and Taraba States would have blocked all exit routes on both sides of the border and called for understanding, more collaboration between the two states to achieve maximum success in the fight against the cross border banditry.
The recent raid on Dawo 11 Community according to reports from the area, left 2 persons death while many others were said to have abandon their homes for safety.
The Bandits who move in their hundreds, also raided a local market killing one person and disposessed traders of their valuables in another cordinated attack on Monday,8th January,2024.
An eye witness who spoke to New Herald on phone, said the bandits in their hundreds were suspected to be Udah and Bokolo migrants from the North West who have been terrorising communities on the Taraba-Adamawa State border.
Unconfirmed report revealed that the bandits were suspected to have been displaced by the Joint Security Operatives in Taraba State after taking over some villages and moved into Toungo LGA of Adamawa State.
Survivors of the various attacks in Toungo LGA told New Herald that the bandits have taken refuge at Karemti,Adaboro and Kogin Baba axis from where they engaged locals both on market days, in their homes and farms.
During one of the encounter, one of the suspected bandits was said to have been killed while the village lost one person, a source confirmed to New Herald.
