The House of Representatives passed the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps.
This bill had previously been passed by the 10th House of Representatives on Thursday, October 12, 2023, but was subsequently cancelled by the House two months later to address emerging issues within the bill.
The bill was sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and House Leader Julius Ihonvbare. It had previously failed to receive Presidential assent following its passage by the 9th Assembly.
The proposed bill aims to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps as a body tasked with the responsibility to develop, empower, and provide gainful employment to youths.
Its primary objectives include facilitating peace, volunteerism, community services, neighborhood watch programs, and contributing to nation-building efforts.
Following its passage by the House of Representatives, the bill will now be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence.
Upon the Senate’s approval, it will then be forwarded to the President for assent.
