National Minimum Wage: N/East Governors Insist On Review of Revenue Sharing Formula In Favour Of States

(By Dennis Kakaba and Zare Baba)

Governors of the North East Subregion have unanimously called for the review of The revenue Formula to favor states as a panacea for effective and negotiable wages for respective states.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed made the call at the zonal public hearings organized by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage in Yola, Adamawa State.

The Governors posit that States and Local Governments are closer to the grassroots, have more responsibilities and have the majority of civil servants than the federal government, hence the need for the review.

Though the 6 States differ in their wage proposals in their respective submissions with less than 70,000 as proposed, other states like Borno and Yobe would prefer to see what the federal government could adopt and use as a template for their negotiations.

Adamawa State NLC, the host state of the public hearing through its Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Fashe however submitted a proposal of 500,000 as minimum wage while the Christian Association of Nigeria proposed 447,000 as minimum wage among others.

The NLC President however suggested that a market public hearing was also needed to appreciate market forces to determine living wage for workers.
