Farmers in Mayah District of Demsa Local Governement Area of Adamawa State have raised the alarm over a strange pest that is destroying sorghum crops in the Area.
The disease which is yet to be officially confirmed is suspected to be insect pests of grain sorghum which according to exparts, could either be “sorghum midge, lesser cornstalk borer, soil insects, fall armyworm, headworms (mainly corn earworm and sorghum webworm), chinch bugs and stink bugs”.
The pest has destroyed over ten thousand hecters of crops in the area dashing the hope for bumper harvest of guinea corn production in the community.
The disease play an important role in the reduction of the potential yield of cereal crops.
New Herald Magazine checks confirms that no official report have been lodged with the governement through the State Ministry of Agriculture, but the suspected “fungi, viruses, nematodes,
weeds and nutrient deficiencies” were experienced few years back.
Farmers who spoke to this medium in Dingle, Bali and Tagombali communities expressed concern over the level of destruction, stating that the situation might compound the already devastating food shortages as well as the food security programme of the governement.
Mayah Community is one of the largest sorghum production hub in Adamawa State, the community still maintains lead in the Sorghum/guinea corn farming hence the need for governement swift response to this distress call for timely control of the pests in the area.
The State Commissioner of Agriculture,Prof David Jatau could not be reached for confirmation despite several efforts as at time of going to the press, also the Director Diseases and Pest Control in the ministry was not also available for comments.
